Our routing table in the system tells us to which system/IP our system can ping or connect.

The routing table has a rule of 0.0.0.0 which means we can connect to any system outside the network

Below image shows the routing table of my system.

Due to rule of 0.0.0.0 we can ping to any IP and system over the internet.

  • So let’s try to ping Google and Facebook

So here we are able to ping both of them.

  • To get the IP address of Google and Facebook we have a command

So one of the Google’s IP is 216.58.199.132 and IP address of Facebook is 69.171.250.35

  • We can ping to both of them

To create a setup such that we can ping to google but not to Facebook we need to add certain rules in our routing table.

  • First, delete the 0.0.0.0 rule
  • Now add the rule for pinging to Google

Setup completed!!!

  • Now try to ping to both the IPs — Google and Facebook
  • Google’s IP is 216.58.199.132 and IP address of Facebook is 69.171.250.35

We can see here that we are able to ping to the IP of Google but not to the IP of Facebook. While pinging to Facebook it’s saying network is unreachable.

So, our required setup is established.
